Joseph Estrada
was born on April 19, 1937 in Tondo, Manila to Engr. Emilio Ejercito and
Maria Marcelo. He was a famous movie actor and producer, the mayor of
San Juan, a member of the Philippine Senate, vice president to President
Ramos and was elected President of the Philippines on June 30, 1998.
He is married to Luisa Pimentel with whom he has three children - Jose,
Jackie Lopez and Jude. He has a son, Joseph Victor from socialite Guia
Gomez.
The Estrada
presidency was accused of plunder and corruption. After his impeachment
trial in the Senate was aborted, anti-Estrada protesters gathered at
EDSA and rose in numbers in days that followed. On January 20, 2001, the
Supreme Court declared the seat of the presidency vacant. Chief Justice
Hilario Davide sworn in his vice president, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as
President of the Philippines. Estrada was tried and charged for plunder
and perjury on April 4, 2001 before the Sandiganbayan and was convicted
on September 12, 2007. He was sentenced to life-time imprisonment and
detained in his Tanay, Rizal rest house but was given a presidential
pardon by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on October 25, 2007. To
date, "Erap" continues to help and support the masses. |
